Generally a bathroom contains three or four main pieces of furniture - the bath, the shower, the toilet and the wash basin. When dealing with a small space careful planning is essential!

Take particular note of where the waste and water supply is in your existing bathroom, unless you are going to remodel completely and are going to position the services around your design. This is not usually very practical because positions of the drains are usually fixed or very costly to alter.

Colour/Decor

Do not forget the staple tools required to fit any bathroom, silcone, plumbers putty and a bucket.

To make the job of installing your bathroom run as smooth as possible, simply open all the packages and check all the sanitaryware for any obvious visible damage like scratches, cracks or marks the day it arrives. Doing this may save you time and money, as it may not be possible to have it put right immediately. Ideally arrange delivery or collection in time for the installer to check before commencement of the installation. 

Bathrooms naturally create a lot of moisture, moisture will cling to the walls and ceilings unless it can be vented away. Apart from being unsightly, its not particularly healthy.

The ideal solution would be to install a ventilation system in the bathroom, vents or extractor fans are both inexpensive and could be a lot cheaper than having to repair damp walls and ceilings. It could even cause serious damage to the structure of the building if left long enough.

If a vent or extractor fan is not an option for you, here are a few tips -

• Wipe down walls and ceilings after every bath or shower, make sure you keep the window open for a time afterwards.

• Sprays can be used to kill any mildew that has collected, it might be advised to repaint your bathroom with an anti-mildew paint.

• Baking soda can elimate mildew and its odour. Sprinkle onto carpets before vacuuming and for tiles and other surfaces,  make a paste by adding water and salt and apply to the effective areas.

• Vinegar is a favourite. Use alone, or mix with water and soap to create a natural cleaning solution. Suitable for bathroom taps, washbasins, toilets and baths.

Factors that need to be taking into consideration when ordering any wall hung ceramics is ensuring they are fitted with the right ‘in-wall’ frames and accessories. 

There are a large number of different manufacturers that produce in wall products including Ideal Standard and Villeroy & Boch. These are metal frames (sometimes with cisterns incorporated in the structure) that fix securely to the floor and wall transferring the weight of the ceramic toilet or basin down to the floor and making the fitting process much easier for the fitter. 

They are capable of holding very heavy loads and as long as they are fitted properly any fears of them breaking are unfounded.  If you want a cheaper alternative to a specialist frame you can use 4” x 3” timbers with reverse mounted bolts protruding through them however you will need to cover the bolts with something to stop them chipping the ceramic and you will need to use large rubber washers when tightening the nuts to hold the pan in place. 

Advantages of wall hung products are there are no nasty silicone lines to collect grime and it is easier to clean around the base of this highly dirty area. There is also the obvious aesthetic benefit and the wow factor that wall hung products create.

• Are you in a hard water area?

• What kind of water system you have?  

• What do you use your shower for?

If you are a wash and go style and just jump in the shower for a quick wash, electric showers are great.

The mixed warm water can then be directed down to fill the bath except that there is no option to divert the mixed water up to a shower. The main advantage of a bath filler over standard bath taps is that it is possible to gauge the temperature of the mixed water as it leaves the spout.

It is extremely difficult to fit the taps, waste and overflow once a bath is in place, so you need to this before you finally position it. Slip a plastic or rubber sealing gasket over the mixer tail, then pop this through the tap hole, so the gasket (which will ensure a waterproof seal) sits between the tap and the bath.

If the position of the bath is to be different to the old one then the water supply and waste pipes will have to be extended to the new position.

Never connect the cold off the rising mains and the hot off the tank feed low pressure. For safety reasons, if the main were to be shut down you could have very hot water coming out and of course you will never have a good control because of the very different pressures between the hot and the cold water. The cold effectively forces out the hot water.

This is frequenlty a thought of or asked question as the market has a extensive range, that come in so many different shapes, sizes and finishes and it can becomes very hard to choose and very confusing.

Heated towel rails will mostly come with a wattage rating, or a BTU rating (British Thermal Unit), sometimes both.

An easy method for working out your BTU requirements is to take the height of your room, multiply it by the width, then multiply it by the depth and multiply it by 5. For instance your room is 6ft x 8ft x 8.5ft so 6x8x8.5x5=2040. Your room requires a heated towel warmer that gives out a minimum of 2040 BTU or more.

• Maximising the space available in your shower -

The amount of space that you have available in your bathroom, shower-room or en-suite will often be the most important factor that determines which shower tray and enclosure that is suitable for you.

• Shower doors and enclosure types -

There are extensive shower door designs to choose from, and most manufacturers will supply a number of variations to suit your design needs. Always double check your specific specification maybe with an expert before making your final product selection.

• Choosing a bath screen to go over your bath -

A common alternative to fitting a shower enclosure and tray is to install a shower over your existing bath, and provide a bath screen or curtain that is compatible for the shower.

• Choosing the correct shower tray for your application -

The size, shape, construction and positioning of the shower tray is a crucial part of the overall design of the bath or shower room. Their are many commonly found shapes and designs available on the market to suit individual needs.

Do not use orange solutions or powder cleaners on brass or gold plated taps as these can scratch and corrode the surface.

Hot soapy water and baking soda are very good products to use, wash down with clear water to remove any soapy or powdery traces, These are non abrasive and are solvent free, safe products.

A few great tips on how to keep your taps looking clean and shiny

• 
  

  Dry your taps after each use with a soft cloth

• 
  

  Use a dab of toothpaste and buff to a shine (except brass or gold plated taps)

• 
  

  To reduce limescale on chrome taps rub half a lemon on the effected area and dry off with a clean cloth.

• 
  

  Keep an old toothbrush for those hard to reach areas 

Remember to take care when using cleaning solutions, and always read the instructions.

Chipping of baths, basin and shower trays can and does happen every day, you are definitely not alone.

So what can be done?

Well don't worry I have 3 options for you

• 
  

  Purchase a repair kit - a quick and easy option giving you a natural finish. This is a paste just like filler which is applied directly to the damaged area leaving a near invisible repair.

• 
  

  Replace your damaged bath, basin or shower tray with a new one.

• 
  

  Just leave it, Do nothing. This is the cheapest option BUT chips or cracks will get worse in time which could result in having to repair the item or even leaving you with the only option to replace it.
