Having a tiny bathroom in your house doesn't mean it has to be any less inviting than other rooms in your home.

Read our space saving handy hints! Ensuring you get the best out of your bathroom.

Generally a bathroom contains three or four main pieces of furniture - the bath, the shower, the toilet and the wash basin. When dealing with a small space careful planning is essential!

Take particular note of where the waste and water supply is in your existing bathroom, unless you are going to remodel completely and are going to position the services around your design. This is not usually very practical because positions of the drains are usually fixed or very costly to alter.

Colour/Decor
Dark and overbearing shades are a no go for small compact bathrooms. Stick with white and other light colours. It will make a room look and seem more spacious. However, a fully white bathroom can look quite clinical and not very appealing. Tone down the white by adding some textured tiles here and there, or a eye catching coloured border.

Lighting/Ambience
With all small spaces, a small bathroom will benefit from great lighting. If your bathroom is tucked away in the loft, a skylight or velux is a superb way to make the most of natural light that’s available. Or if your bathroom is just plain small and small windows are your only alternative source, go for halogen spotlights rather than one central light feature.

Add
a focal point
Choose a item in your bathroom and make that the focal point of the design – whether it be a fabulous bath or a statement piece, eg mirror. But don’t go over the top though. One statement piece is plenty in small spaces and to much clutter will just make your bathroom overcrowded and difficult to use.

Inventive
storage
Use the space you have wisely, fit unique, purpose designed or bespoke storage solutions, such as easily accessible draws, cupboards and cabinets. These may not be that cost effective but will indeed add that personal touch and help tidy away any unsightly clutter.

Think outside the box and think about the future
You may decide that you don't want a bath and a shower, but if you can have them both and comfortably, it could be a great idea to do so. There is nothing better than a good soak after a hard day at work, and bathrooms that have both baths and showers are more attractive for future buyers, should you come to sell your home in the future!
