Mildew is nearly always caused by poor ventilation.
Bathrooms naturally create a lot of moisture, moisture will cling to the walls and ceilings unless it can be vented away. Apart from being unsightly, its not particularly healthy.
The ideal solution would be to install a ventilation system in the bathroom, vents or extractor fans are both inexpensive and could be a lot cheaper than having to repair damp walls and ceilings. It could even cause serious damage to the structure of the building if left long enough.
If a vent or extractor fan is not an option for you, here are a few tips -
-
Wipe down walls and ceilings after every bath or shower, make sure you keep the window open for a time afterwards.
-
Sprays can be used to kill any mildew that has collected, it might be advised to repaint your bathroom with an anti-mildew paint.
-
Baking soda can elimate mildew and its odour. Sprinkle onto carpets before vacuuming and for tiles and other surfaces, make a paste by adding water and salt and apply to the effective areas.
-
Vinegar is a favourite. Use alone, or mix with water and soap to create a natural cleaning solution. Suitable for bathroom taps, washbasins, toilets and baths.
